Client: CIOB – Chartered Institute of Building

The CIOB is the most influential professional body for construction management and leadership, with around 50,000 members in more than 100 countries. Their members work in disciplines that cover the entire lifecycle of a built asset and even in the education and development of the next generation of professionals.

The task was to lead a robust research based strategic programme to inform the development of a new strategy and value proposition to help CIOB extend its role beyond individuals and construction companies, into the client company space – for the first time.

The final outcome was a detailed research based strategic recommendations report outlining a new strategy, roadmap and value proposition to help CIOB enter the client space for the first time.

CMDi helped to guide the CIOB team towards a bold new strategy, involving the facilitation of an international working group, supported by the CEO and President.

The essence of the strategy is to engage with clients and provide them with what they need, via a new digital hub and collaboration programme.

Key objectives included:

  • Share best practice in construction management with clients around the world.
  • Influence the culture of construction through greater collaboration, improved safety and quality, and improved project outcomes.
  • Support CIOB-accredited building companies, construction management companies and consultants to deliver on targets for quality, ED&I and environmental sustainability.
  • Raise awareness of CIOB and modern professionalism in construction management.
  • Increase demand from clients for MCIOB and FCIOB (and the new Tech CIOB) qualifications and encourage more clients to appoint CIOB chartered company members for their projects.
Create an actionable strategy that positions CIOB as the professional body for construction management, extending its reach to clients, beyond its historic heartland of individuals and construction companies – internationally.
Research and strategy programme design and leadership • Working group management • International qual and quant research interviews • Multiple report stages • Board presentation • Final recommendations, value proposition and implementation roadmap
The strategy is now entering a long-term implementation phase.

A sincere thank you for all your hard work and guidance in the shaping of the CIOB Client Strategy. Your positive outlook and client-focussed flexibility to accommodate competing demands and timescales was very much appreciated; as was your engagement with and navigation of a common approach with the Working Group. The research was robust, and its insights resulted in approval of the strategy by the CIOB Board of Trustees. We now embark on its implementation. It has been a pleasure working with you both and we look forward to hopefully working with you again in the future.
