Client: The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

To help move the organisation forward, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) needed a new and sharper plan with impactful execution.

The CIOB is the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. They have a Royal Charter to promote the science and practice of building and construction for the benefit of society, and have been doing that since 1834. Their members work worldwide in the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment.

Having undergone a robust process of stakeholder and member involvement to develop the initial stages of the plan, CIOB invited CMDi to provide strategic direction to help sharpen it and design a framework that allowed it to be clearly communicated.

This involved a series of workshops with staff and members of the Board Trustees, a thorough review of the organisation’s objectives over the next three years, and clarifying how those objectives will be structured to deliver improved value for its 45,000 international members as well as growth and improved processes for the CIOB itself.

The CIOB Corporate Plan sets out what the Institute will be working on from 2020 to the end of 2022. It is focused around one key guiding principle: the moral compass of the construction industry. As the leading professional organisation in construction management, the CIOB’s role in the coming years is to be the moral compass of the construction industry.

The Corporate Plan also provides a framework of how business as usual should be conducted, the standards that should be met, and the aims that the Institute wants to achieve. It has been designed to position the CIOB as a driving force, leading a cultural shift that improves professionalism in construction, for the public good.

To sharpen the organisation’s plan to create a memorable vision everyone can believe in, feel proud of, and be inspired by – from staff and members to external stakeholders – and which moves CIOB forward.
Corporate plan workshops • Plan structure and design • Vision • Mission and theme articulation • Design and copy for the full plan
The plan has carefully developed goals that will be measured over the next three years by the organisation itself.

CMDi worked closely with the senior management team and Board of Trustees to help sharpen the plan and articulate the messages. The result is a plan that is well constructed, designed and provides exactly the clarity we need to move the CIOB forward with confidence over the next 3 years.

CMDi delivered superb facilitation comfortably working with the Exec team and our senior stakeholders. The Corporate Plan in particular is considered by the Trustees as our most professional and progressive to date.
